Along with CUPE 718, representing city hall staff, the city's 1,250 unionized workers voted 97 per cent in favour of the longest deal ever reached with the city. “The city...said they wanted to get through the 2010 Olympics and that they didn't want to be bargaining in 2011, which is a municipal election year," said Robert Gilchrist, president of CUPE 718, representing city hall workers. Gilchrist said the union was also able to work out a letter of agreement that provides protection for future workers at the oval, recognizing Olympic organizers want to use volunteers and bring in specialists.
